Regional Coupling

In a Regional Coupling experiment a predefined region of the surface of the ocean in the coupled UM is relaxed back to a prescribed SST field (usually a climatology). Other regions of the ocean surface are allowed to freely vary. This allows the user to examine the impact of different components of the climate system on other components of the climate system. For example, we can relax the SSTs over the Equatorial Pacific back to climatology and hence suppress El Nino and therefore examine the climate system in the abscence of El Nino.

  • Haney Forcing - the technique use to create Regional Coupling experiments
  • Haney Modset - The modset required to run a regional coupling experiment
  • Make SSTSSS Ancil - create the SST/SSS ancillary file used by the Haney Forcing
